What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is a general term for hair loss. Alopecia can be non-scarring (reversible) or scarring (non-reversible). There are many types each with their own causes.
What are the Types of Alopecia?
Alopecia Areata: hair loss in round, circular patches. This type of hair loss is commonly caused by autoimmune conditions or stress. Subclasses of alopecia areata include:
Alopecia Barbae- Loss of hair in the beard area
Alopecia Totalis- Complete loss on the scalp
Alopecia Universalis- Complete loss anywhere hair grows

Androgenic alopecia: The most common type of hair loss. Occurs in both male and females. Also know as male or female pattern baldness. This is heredity hair loss. Usually this will present as a classic widows peak or thinning at the crown of the scalp

Telogen Effluvium: This is hair loss or thinning after experiencing emotional, physical, medical, or mental stress. Usually occurs after pregnancy and resolved.
